Orange
Started this series a few years ago during an Art Sunday with friends from the Oddball Art Labs. The first in the gallery was the initial work with the others following in an unspecified order. A sort-of mythology started developing around these characters, some of which is written down and to be developed through more paintings. The main paintings are on the lids of recovered wood wine crates; the smaller ones were done for the Oddball Art Laboratory Art Machine.
Small Paintings
Alien Abduction
Executed for the 2021 Oddball Art Labs Holiday Art Exchange. Some years it’s a random draw of who gets what art, but during COVID, the rules changed so that we knew ahead of time for whom we’d be making art. That year, I was creating for outstanding Wisconsin artist and all-around good egg, Barbara Grant — so I had to be on my game. Roughly 6″ x 6″, this multi-media piece is lashed together with acrylic paint, toothpicks, wire, bakeable polymer clay, nails, and a broken piece of karate board.
Little did I know this 3D piece would turn into a new style to explore.
The Big Woo
Based on the classic 1990 movie Joe vs. The Volcano, this second 3D pieces was created for the Oddball Art Labs Totally Tiki show (2022) with more acrylic paint, wood stain, broken karate boards, wire, and bake-able polymer. The island part of the piece is thick karate board that was taken outside and given texture by beating on it with a rock. When the board split, I thought the piece was ruined, but figured that cracks and fissures would be a natural part of a volcanic island. “The Big Woo” sold during the opening reception.
Observatory
Another piece for the 2022 Oddball Art Labs Holiday Art Exchange. More broken karate boards, more bakeable polymer. The telescope sticking out of the observatory is the head of a small nail. The starry sky inside and outside the frame is very fine white play sand. This was a random drawing year and wound up in the home of the fantastic and prolific artist, Alisa Duda.
Sisyphus
Small painting done as a random 2023 Xmas gift for a friend and artist extraordinaire , Mike Rende. Media includes broken karate boards, bake-able polymer, acrylic modeling paste, wire, acrylic paint, cyanoacrylate (super glue). Blocks for the Oddball Art Labs Art Machine
An immediate hit with the public since it’s 2018 debut at the “Strange Imaginations and Other Perplexing Wonders” gallery show, the Oddball Art Machine has been making quality art available to the public for a reasonable price. The deal is that $5 will get you a piece of original art by the contributing artist of your choice. The Oddballs currently have two Art Machines (with more on the way), at least one of which appears at every Oddball exhibition. Click here for more information on the Oddball Art Machine and it’s current location — or to create your own art blocks for the vending machine.
Birds
Birds seemed like a good subject for the art blocks.
Misc.
An assortment of paintings, sculpture, and other creations. Some explanation may be required, but that’ll come later. If you can’t wait that long, drop me a line via the email address in my About page and I’ll get back to you PDQ.
